Critical PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 & CVE-2026-109619): Analysis and VPS Fix Guide

A set of critical zero-day vulnerabilities in PHP core, collectively dubbed PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619), was publicly disclosed. Rated 9.2 CVSS v4.0, these security flaws allow unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) on servers running vulnerable PHP versions—including Apache mod_php, PHP-FPM, Nginx setups, LiteSpeed, and FrankenPHP.

Critical PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 & CVE-2026-109619): Analysis and VPS Fix Guide

Because the exploit payload executes before WordPress application logic is fully loaded, patching your server binaries and hardening your setup immediately is mandatory.

Technical Overview: What Are CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619?

Both vulnerabilities occur during request initialization or interruption before application code runs.

  1. CVE-2026-109618 (Out-Of-Memory Memory Corruption): When a malformed or oversized multipart/form-data payload triggers a memory limit exception (longjmp()), PHP interrupts process initialization. During cleanup, PHP incorrectly processes partially initialized pointers, resulting in a use-after-free or memory corruption state that can be weaponized for code execution.
  2. CVE-2026-109619 (Stale Global State Across Requests): When a request terminates due to a fatal error or timeout, worker process memory is freed. However, persistent worker engines (like PHP-FPM) can retain dangling pointers to freed memory. A subsequent HTTP request handled by the same worker can access this stale state before re-initialization, leading to arbitrary code execution.

Step-by-Step Patching Guide for VPS & DigitalOcean Droplets

To fully resolve the issue, you must update PHP core to fixed patch versions:

  • PHP 8.2: Update to 8.2.35 or higher
  • PHP 8.3: Update to 8.3.36 or higher
  • PHP 8.4: Update to 8.4.27 or higher
  • PHP 8.5: Update to 8.5.12 or higher

Step 1: Connect to Your VPS and Check Installed PHP Version

Open your terminal and SSH into your server:

ssh root@your_server_ip

Verify your active PHP version:

php -v

Step 2: Update PHP Binary Packages

Select the commands matching your operating system.

For Ubuntu / Debian Systems

# Update repository package index
sudo apt update

# Upgrade PHP packages
sudo apt --only-upgrade install php* -y

# Alternatively, run a full system package upgrade
sudo apt upgrade -y

For RHEL / AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux / CentOS Systems

# Clean cache and refresh package metadata
sudo dnf clean all && sudo dnf makecache

# Upgrade PHP packages via DNF/YUM
sudo dnf upgrade "php*" -y

Step 3: Restart PHP-FPM and Web Services

Updating the binary files on disk is not enough; active PHP-FPM or web server worker processes in RAM must be restarted to apply the patch.

If using Nginx + PHP-FPM:

Identify your active PHP-FPM version (e.g., php8.3-fpm, php8.2-fpm) and restart it:

# For PHP 8.3
sudo systemctl restart php8.3-fpm

# For PHP 8.2
sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpm

# Reload Nginx web server
sudo systemctl reload nginx

If using Apache (mod_php or mpm_event with PHP-FPM):

# Restart Apache service
sudo systemctl restart apache2 # On Ubuntu/Debian
# OR
sudo systemctl restart httpd # On RHEL/AlmaLinux

Verify Updated Version:

php -v

Confirm that the output reports one of the safe releases (8.2.35+, 8.3.36+, 8.4.27+, 8.5.12+).

Temporary Server Hardening Mitigations

If you are waiting for your OS repository to release updated packages, apply these temporary configuration tweaks to reduce attack surface.

  1. Disable session.upload_progress:In your php.ini file (e.g., /etc/php/8.3/fpm/php.ini), add or set:
session.upload_progress.enabled = 0

  1. Restrict POST & File Upload Limits: Lower maximum allowed post sizes in php.ini to mitigate memory allocation spikes:
post_max_size = 16M
upload_max_filesize = 10M
  1. Restart PHP-FPM afterwards to apply changes:
sudo systemctl restart php8.3-fpm

Application Layer Defense: Configuring Wordfence on WordPress

While core PHP vulnerabilities exist at the binary/runtime level (below WordPress execution), Wordfence Web Application Firewall (WAF) provides essential defense-in-depth against malicious payloads targeting known entry points.

  1. Enable Wordfence Firewall Extended Protection
    1. Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
    2. Navigate to Wordfence > Firewall.
    3. Click Manage Firewall.
    4. Click Optimize the Wordfence Firewall.
    5. Download your .htaccess or user.ini backup when prompted, and complete the setup. This ensures Wordfence initializes (auto_prepend_file) as early as possible during HTTP requests.
  2. Update Wordfence Firewall Rules
    1. Go to Wordfence > Firewall > Firewall Options.
    2. Ensure Rules Auto-Update is enabled.
    3. Manually click Check for Rules Update to pull down real-time threat intelligence rules designed to block exploit signatures targeting CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619.
  3. Configure Rate Limiting & Brute Force Controls
    1. Go to Wordfence > Firewall > Advanced Firewall Rules.
    2. Enable Rate Limiting to restrict automated bots bombarding your upload endpoints with malformed multipart requests.

Summary Checklist

  • [ ] Connected via SSH to VPS / DigitalOcean Droplet.
  • [ ] Updated system PHP packages via apt or dnf.
  • [ ] Confirmed PHP version is updated (php -v).
  • [ ] Restarted php-fpm and nginx/apache services.
  • [ ] Verified Wordfence Firewall is in Extended Protection mode on WordPress.
  • [ ] Triggered manual rule updates in Wordfence.
